Post about what kind of books you like and specific books you'd recommend for people to read.

I'm mostly into Fantasy/Sci Fi, two excellent book series I'd recommend for you to read are:

Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game series, and in it especially the shadow series expanding from it

George Martin's Song of Ice and Fire series, probably the best series of books I've read.

Yes! Favourite books of mine.

Yeah they've finished filming the first one now and I think it's due out in the summer sometime... Hope they don't mess it up...

They`re making a movie about Pullmans books? Cool, just hope they don`t mess it up, I really liked the books. If you`re into fantasy/magicians I recommend Jonathan Stroud`s Bartimaeus Trilogy. Wonderful books and djinni Bartimaeus is hilarious.

I'm somewhat of a bookworm, but I read a lot of teen fiction novels (even though I'm 20!). The Harry Potter series is my favorite series of all time! The last 'adult' type book I read was "Yes Man" by Danny Wallace, and I highly recommend it!

Absolutely loved this trilogy and will probably go see the film. For me though the films never seem to live up to the books.

I have them books sitting on my bookshelf but I can't get into them, I'm always distracted and end up reading something else really.
But I will go and see the film it might help me get into them a bit more.

Is the film about the first book or all of them do you know?

Permutation City by Greg Egan is a good read. It's about electronic copies of people living in a virtual world and makes you think about their rights, etc.

Ooh, and The Cosmic Trilogy by C.S. Lewis is another set of novels that springs to mind. It's sci-fi, incredibly imaginative, and more of an adult read than his Narnia stories.

Peter
22-02-2007, 11:41
They're good, although I prefer the science/technology ones, (Ring/Spiral by Koji Suzuki, and Parasite Eve by Hideki Senai).

"The Soul of Anna Klane" by Terrel Miedaner is very good, although it can be a bit difficult to get hold of sometimes, the Kazuo Ishiguro books are good.

Fantasy is good too, Robert Jordan (Wheel of Time Series), J.K. Rowling (Harry Potter, obviously) and Terry Pratchett (Discworld) being good there, Philip K. **** and Douglas Adams (Hitchhikers) for Sci-fi, and a couple of Stephen King books (It and "The Stand" are particularly good, just don't get so sucked in that you forget to sleep) when I don't feel like much brainwork.

Anthony Burgess' "A Clockwork Orange" is also much worth reading, along with Harper Lee's "To Kill a Mockingbird"

That should keep people reading for a while, and it'll introduce some to one hell of a lot of scientific/philosophical/ethical theories (I'm quite keen on books about those, Plato's a cool guy, if a little boring and single minded at times. His "Republic" is good, but I wouldn't suggest reading it unless you're interested, as it'd probably be rather boring)

Harry potter definitely the best. Also loved LOTR and currently reading The Hobbit.

Also got the Dark Materials to read after the hobbit. Anything by Dan Brown, especially Angels and Demons and Deception Point i'd recommend to everyone. Also Michael Crichton's books are quite good but Prey was disappointing IMO.

Definitely have to start reading some Stephen King!!!!

If you are into historical fiction, like I am, you'll love
Diana Gabaldon's Outlanderseries. It's packed with such wonderful insight and not to mention has just about the most innovatiive plot sequence I've read so far.
Let me know what you think! ;)

I'm into fantasy or horror related books and books written by Japanese authors translated to English. I'd def. have to recommend "Out" by Natsuo Kirino--its a page turner :)

I take it you've read Ringu by Koji Suzuki, then? It really is excellent - far better than any of the films of it (and very different to them, too).

I'm currently reading Michael Marshall [Smith]'s One of Us - it's a vaguely sci-fi thriller. Not his best, but still jolly good (his first two - Only Forward and Spares - are simply astouding). He has a new one out next week, which I'm somewhat looking forward to, and I daresay I'll be reading next.

I definitely recommend anything written by Michael Crichton. He wrote books such as Jurassic Park, Timeline, The Andromeda Strain and Sphere. My favourite was easily Prey. Almost read it in one sitting.

A lot of it is scientific, but the suspense is incredible.

Anyhow, right now I'm reading Pride and Prejudice, by Jane Austen. I don't know if it's because French is my 1st language but I'm having a hard time understanding the vocabulary, and the sentence structure is a tad confusing. It's a good thing I watched the movie beforehand.

07-05-2007, 03:28
I`ve just read "Wicked: The life and times of the Wicked Witch of the West" by Gregory Maguire. It`s the story of how Elphaba, the wicked witch of the west in the wizard of OZ, became the witch. Great read. I also recommend "The magicians trilogy" by Trudi Canavan. Right now I`m reading Michael Crichtons new book "Next". It`s pretty good if you`re interested in genetics, but there are so many different characters in the book one tends to get a bit confused, especially since he`s not getting into the characters that much so one really gets to know them.

Neil Gaiman is one of my favorite authors... his use of the English language is awesome. A great book that plays with words is Neverwhere... it wasn't until my trip to London in October that I realized the book is totally based on the London Underground. :-) My fave of his work is Anansi Boys. Absolutely HILARIOUS.

i'm reading 1984 right now and it's pretty good so far...

I've been wanting to read that again, especially recently when I was studying about NPR cameras, ID cards and new "anti-terrorism" laws. Big Brother is already watching us!!! <-- (This is not a reference to a crap 'reality' show, for anyone who's never heard of George Orwell.) :P

Recently I've read 'Jango' by William Nicholson, the second book in the Noble Warriors trilogy. It was even better than the first book. Can't wait for the final book to be published. Then I read 'Here Lies Arthur' by Philip Reeve, which was a really clever and well-written alternative take on the King Arthur story. I'm currently reading his 'Mortal Engines', which is the first in a series of four. I'm enjoying it, but I'm inclined to think that Kenneth Oppel's 'Airborn' was a better book on a similar note. Anyone else read or reading any of these?

However, tomorrow I must really get on with reading my course book, as I have an assignment to do! :-\

I`m about 3/4 through with book 1 of The wheel of time - The eye of the world by Robert Jordan. If you`re into fantasy and liked LOTR, you might like this series. It has 11 parts/books though, so it is rather extensive. But it`s not so bad when you consider that the German translation consists of 30 odd parts ;D

I used to read every Stephen King book there was, but the Dark Tower never appealed to me, don`t know why. Maybe I should give it another try, since I`m reading more fantasy now.

Any book by co-authors Lincoln/Child is really good, haven`t had a bad one yet. The Relic is fantastic, Reliquary, Mount Dragon, The cabinet of curiosities, Thunderhead all really good.

Books I'd recommend ...

'The Time Traveler's Wife' by Audrey Niffenegger. A romantic time travel story. It's great.

'Girlfriend in a Coma' by Douglas Coupland. Not really sure how to catagorize this one - elements of it reminded me of 'Donnie Darko'. Still don't really get the ending though!

'The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay' by Michael Chabon. A tale of friendship and heartbreak against the back drop of the Second World War and the Golden Age of comic books.

'The Book of Lost Things' by John Connolly. A dark fantasy, kind of a cross between C.S Lewis and the film 'Pan's Labyrinth'.

From when I was younger til today, I say anything by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman, and a friend got me into Clive Cussler books (Dirk Pitt novels)- very good adventures series. Stephen King Dark Tower series is great, too, for fantasy buffs. Plus, any Robert Jordan...all the way back to Conan. And I agree, Potter Potter is fantastic, too; just got the new/final book.

I know it's an oldy and you're supposed to read it in High School, but I recently picked up Watership Down and LOVE IT. I also love reading the little tales from the sequel, Tales From Watership Down. They're so adventurous and fun.

Ok, bit late into this... but if you want a good "children's" series similar to HP then try Eoin Colfer's Artemis Fowl set which are pretty good, otherwise Jeffrey Deaver but the ones with Lincoln Rhyme in eg The Bone Collector, Vanished Man etc.

one of the most obscure and best series i have ever read, was a book named "Ender's Game" which is the beginning of an epic story of a kid who becomes a hero, and his friends. Wonderful book, highest recommendation. Also has something, ive never seen b4 in literature (least not to my knowledge) they wrote a parallel book, explaining the exploits of one of ender's biggest competitors and even friend Bean, cant remember the name of the parallel, but i also read it and was amazing to see the same story from a different perspective (if u read enders game, u can find out the name of the parallel)

Well I always seem to re-read the classics during summertime. Like Jane Austen: Pride & Prejudice and Louisa M. Alcott: Little Women.

Last book I read was P&P. And I absolutely loved it, but found it really boring at school.
Am currently halfway through Great Expectations and am loving it. ****ens is something else.
Oh, and I love the Adrian Mole books; anyone heard of them?

Yes, I remember this book - they had war simulations ...seemed like video games...but actually the 5 year old genius kid's were unknowingly actually involved in real warfare. It was ok..but not especially well written...[br]Posted on: September 20, 2007, 09:27:37 AM________________________________________________ _

The rest of the book goes back in history to describe the life stories of her ancestors - ancient China, Finland, Sweden, colonial America...really well written.

I guess it depends what genres you like. I just finished the George RR Martin meganovels, and enjoyed them quite a lot. If you like romantic novels that make you cry, Nicholas Sparks and Kristin Hannah are good. If you like humorous, easy read, detective stories the Janet Evanovich Stephanie Plum series are a hoot. Dianne Wynn Jones and Lindsey Davis have been recommended to me recently. I also loved the Harry Potter books. David Baldacci is pretty good. I like Michael Conolley and the Harry Bosch series. I like James Patterson and John Grisham. I really like Lisa Scottoline and her lady lawyers. Guys like Clive Barker and Webb Griffin. I'm getting ready to read William Shatner's book. I liked the Atemis Fowl books by Eoin Colfer and the Septimus Heap series by Angie Sage. I'm also reading some Christian theme books, but the religious talk detracts form the story line rather than adds. And I've read a bunch of animal story books which I always enjoy. And I've read a lot medical books which I wouldn't recommend to anyone-LOL

I've read Jurassic Park too, and I have to say it was fashinating - much better than the movie, though books usually are better :)

I can't believe that you were the only person to suggest Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time. Amazing books! It is sad that RJ died last month while his 12th and final book in the series was still getting written, but it will be finished by someone. Great books if you like Lord of the Rings type epic fantasy. A little too detailed for some though.

Well here are a few I've read lately that I am pleased with. (My husband has a Stephen King collection, hence the large amount of reading by him)

Stephen King:
Nighmares & Dreamscapes - a little old but a series of short stories, I litterally read for 3 days straight and couldn't put it down.
His newer one - Cell- A pretty good twist on the whole zombie idea

Jack Finney - The BodySnatchers - Another old one, but a page turner.

Also I really likes The Mists Of Avalon. Not sure the author. But There was also a made for TV movie on the book. If you've watched it I suggest the book, because it has tons more details on the characters and story line. If you haven't watched it. I higly suggest it. Best turn on the King Arthur/Round Table stories I've ever read. It's from the women's point of view.

Recently read the Dark Jewels trilogy by Anne Bishop. It's one of the best Fantasy series I've ever read. It sort of defies description - it is dark fantasy but also has some superb clever humor. The character development is just right. The underlying concept is new and unique (something very hard to find anymore). I suggested it to someone else and they felt the same way so that's at least two thumbs up. If anyone else reads it (or already has) please share your opinion.

I read Nine Stories by J.D. Salinger recently and loved it. I think I liked Catcher in the Rye a little more, but both were great.

I really enjoy fantasy. At the moment I'm reading robert jordan... like lord of the rings but thirteen books (well twelve and a half, he died before he completed it...) and much much much slower than LotR

Since my last suggestion was a fantasy series, I thought I'd suggest something for you SciFi fans - The Four Lords of The Diamond series (4 books) by Jack L. Chalker. It is one of those that sucks you in from the first few paragraphs and I've never known anyone who could put it down after reading the first chapter. Plus it's basic concept is something unique instead of something that's already been done to death.

I'm currently reading Ken Follett's "Third Twin". Not bad, but the story is kinda predictable and it's simply not his best novel. I love Pillars of the Earth though. Awesome book!

I'm an English Lit and Psych major so my reading list is always choc a block. Lately, I read the Dan Pelzer Trilogy - A boy named It and so on... They are so heartwrenching and beautifully written. ALso, anything by Dan Brown is a winner.

for high fantasy i'd recommend Tolken and Gemmel. If you are looking for a lot of darker fantasy/ sci-fi the Warhammer and Warhammer: 40,000 books are pretty great. They are writen by various authors but take polace in the same universe. just look up Black Library (the publishing company)

If anyone here likes good fantasy, go for Mercedes Lackey's novels of Valdemar. There are about 20 of them, most of them trilogies but they can be read stand-alone. If you want to try reading them, start with The Black Gryphon...then just do what you want from there on in, the novel should have a list of the other Valdemar novels.

Oh, if didn't like the ending of the harry potter books, search for the site Portkey and then search for Vox Coropis on that site. it is a great alternate story that goes from the end of the fourth book on. Oh, and I did not write it :18:

I read Philip Pulman's trilogy. It's good, but not great. Dune (the 3 first books, only!) and The Lord of the Rings are still my favorites!

A good scifi series I'm reading right now is Rama by Arthur C. Clarke. Currently I'm on book number two: Rama II which Clarke authored with Gentry Lee. It's based around an alien spaceship that enters our solar system that a crew of of humans fly out and meet. The series tells of the world they discover within the ship. I'll let you read them to find out the rest. Highly recommended if your a science fiction fan.

I've just read Atonement by Ian McEwan. I wanted to read it ever since I've seen the brilliant movie version. The book's just as amazing, great psychological portraits, the plot, reality of war...I recommend it to everyone, but it's not an easy and light reading so it may be not everyone's cup of tea.

HG Wells, George Orwell, Jules Verne are some great classic authors.

Recent preferences go from Terry Brooks to James Clavell for their Shannara and Asian saga series, respectively. But a great novel would be the Counte of Monte Cristo by Alexander Dumas - simply stellar.

I just finished reading Post Office and Fac-to-tum, both by Charles Bukowski. They weren't terrible but I was really expecting them to be better. I decided to read them because his name kept coming up in music I was listening to and other websites that I frequent. Everyone says how influential he has been to American literature but I don't really see it...they are an easy read, I read both in about three days and I did enjoy parts so it wouldn't be a complete waste of time to check them out.
